PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency: Athens

Program Description

Our ASHP/APhA accredited program offers three post-graduate (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Positions by the UGA College of Pharmacy. Two of the sites are located in Athens, GA at Kroger® Pharmacy and an independent pharmacy, Village Drug Shop. The other site is in Augusta, GA at an independent pharmacy, Barney’s Pharmacy. In general, approximately 60% of your weekly patient care and project time will be spent at the primary site. UGA residents are classified as graduate students and will receive a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Pharmacy in addition to the Residency Certificate upon successful completion of the program.

Other sites may include:

  • Athens Regional Medical Center Coumadin Clinic
  • Mercy Health Center, Athens
  • VA Outpatient Clinic, Athens

Through these practice sites, residents will have opportunities to:

  • Develop innovative community pharmacy and medication therapy management services and patient care clinics
  • Perform screenings, immunizations, and lab tests
  • Interact and collaborate with physicians and nurses as a part of a healthcare team to optimize pharmaceutical care
  • Provide community service health fairs and educational sessions
  • Precept and train pharmacy students both in small and large group settings at practice sites and in the classroom

Residents will have access to highly diverse patient populations through a number of varied community and ambulatory care practice sites. UGA Community Pharmacy Faculty members have developed unique practices, which provide excellent resident learning environments. Through Kroger Pharmacy and Village Drug Shop, our primary residency program partners, residents have the opportunity to utilize learned ambulatory care skills in a busy, highly complex retail store.

Residency preceptors at each site will oversee the day to day activities of the resident and provide coaching and feedback on performance. Learning activities will be planned based on the resident’s individual practice needs and interests. Within this structure, the resident will develop patient care skills, design and implement programs and projects, precept students, work with and educate other healthcare providers, and teach patients.

All residents are required to conduct and complete (and submit for publication) a major research project. Preliminary data will be presented in poster format at the APhA Annual Meeting; more formally analyzed data will be presented at the Southeastern States Regional Residency Conference, held in Athens each spring. You will also be provided other professional travel and networking opportunities throughout the year.

All UGA residents will enroll in and complete the UGA Residency Teaching Program. A special teaching certificate will be awarded to residents at the end of the year indicating successful completion and proficiency as a pharmacy educator.

Other learning experiences include:

  • Residency Orientation (July--mid-August)
  • Drug Information
  • Practice Management Educational Sessions/Projects
  • Practice Coverage on weekends
  • Residency Class Trip
  • Community Service
  • Pharmacy Grand Rounds
  • Faculty Journal Club
